City Year Chicago
Team Leader & Student Success Coach
City Year is a selective leadership development Americorps program, with an acceptance rate of 25%, aimed at bridging the gap in education inequity and creating a pipeline to graduation. For 2 years, I worked with ninth grade students at Roberto Clemente Community Academy (96.5% low income and 23.7% diverse learners) located on the West side of Chicago in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
As a Team Leader during school year 2019-2020, I coached a team of 6 AmeriCorps members and facilitated daily trainings for my team focused on data management, tutoring best practices, event planning, and student relationships.
As a Student Success Coach during school year 2018-201919, I provided academic, social-emotional learning, and attendance interventions to 12 ninth grade students, resulting in all 12 students reaching “on-track” status for graduating high school. Interventions consisted of English small group instruction (60 minutes a week per student), leadership and social skills curriculum (30 minutes a week per student), and attendance and behavior coaching conversations (20 minutes a week per student).
“I believe in the values and mission of the organization while upholding a high level of accountability to the City Year expectations and continuous service as an AmeriCorps member.”
Throughout this journey, I have learned the fundamentals and value of being an empathetic and goal oriented leader.
Projects
Analytics Coordinator
Tutoring Time
As the Analytics Coordinator, I ensured 72 students receive 15 hours of tutoring time with at least 50% of students showing an improvement in Math and Language Arts. I also developed and facilitated monthly analytics meetings to leverage data to drive program implementation and identify barriers to serve.
Additionally, I created an enabling environment for data fluent culture:
Facilitated team schedule with built in data entry time
Designed a data visualization wall to track time on task (shown above)
Recognized team members for meeting and exceeding tutoring goals
Attended data meetings with direct leadership and administration to show student growth
Outreach Coordinator
Marketing & Communications
As the Outreach Coordinator for our team during school year 2018-2019, I created and managed our Instagram account. I planned over 50 posts and increased followers over 80% during a 10-month period. We encouraged students, teachers, and community businesses to follow us when we had food or supplies donated to our team.
CASEL Conference
October 19, 2019
I was featured with 9 other Team Leaders to represent City Year Chicago at the global and inaugural Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning Conference to showcase the social-emotional activities that students participated in the previous year. The conference reached 1,500 educators, nonprofit leaders, and researchers from around the globe.
